Tai Chi for panic attacks... now that is an interesting concept. But can Tai Chi help with panic attacks?
There have been many books and articles written on the health benefits of Tai Chi.
It's a form of low impact exercise that can be practiced by people of just about any age. It can be practiced just about anywhere, and it doesn't take long to perform a Tai Chi set.
I've personally taken Tai Chi now ever since I've been panic attack free, and I do find it very relaxing. My personal favorite is still stretching and yoga, but Tai Chi ranks right up there as one of my favorite ways to relax.
As far as I'm aware there's no "Tai Chi for Panic Attacks" specific exercise, but there are many very straightforward Tai Chi sets that can be effective at creating a state of relaxation.
Here are some examples of Tai Chi being practiced in a Tai Chi Video by David Dorian Ross:
Tai Chi is something that can take years to master, but it's benefits can be felt much more immediately -- usually after each session in the form of lightness and relaxation.
That's what I find... Tai Chi simply helps you feel more relaxed.
There are many styles of Tai Chi, and there are also many related disciplines, such as Chi Kung (also spelt Qi Gong), and other internal martial arts. The goal of all of these martial arts is to increase the inner vitality (chi) of the practitioner.
Personally, I've found that Tai Chi can be useful for panic attacks, in that it's a helpful to learn to relax and help with learning to cope with stress effectively.
I found that Tai Chi was a complimentary practice that assisted with learning to relax while I was being treated for panic attacks. Having said that, I don't believe that Tai Chi would have solved my panic attacks on its own. My doctor and counselor provided the treatment, and relaxation techniques were the tools I used to implement what I had learned. What I mean is that relaxation techniques were one part of the equation, but by no means were the entire solution.
Overall, I enjoy the practice of Tai Chi, and it's a method that I've found very effective for inducing the relaxation response in my own life.
Note: You should always talk to your physician before starting any new physical activity or exercise program.
