Dealing with MRI Panic Attacks

Dealing with MRI panic attacks can be challenging, especially if the first panic attack you've ever had is experienced during the MRI.

Panic attacks during an MRI are often triggered by claustrophobia (a fear of enclosed spaces).

There are some steps you can take to prepare yourself mentally for the MRI, and there are other options available as well through talking to your physician.

Discover a proven solution for overcoming panic attacks

One of the first things you should do is to seek treatment for your panic attacks by talking to your doctor. If you've already been treated, and you know that you're having an MRI, talk to your doctor and ask about any medications that might help, and any other advice he/she might have in order to have a successful MRI.

Dealing with MRI panic attacks may be challenging, but there are some things that your doctor might be able to do to help.

There are times when a doctor might prescribe medication to help sedate you prior to having your test done in order to ensure a successful test.

You can always talk to a professional therapist or counsellor about your fears of an MRI, and they might be able to assist you with some additional techniques for dealing with the fear of enclosed spaces.

Here are some steps you can take to prepare yourself for a successful MRI:

  • Think rationally. Thousands of people each year go for an MRI test. It is a safe procedure, and many people have it done, and you can too.
  • Talk to your doctor.Tell him/her about your concerns about the test, and see if he/she has any helpful advice to give
  • See a counsellor/therapist and talk to them about the test. If you have claustrophobia, talk to them about it and see what recommendations they have to help you
  • Think positive thoughts. Tell yourself that it will be a positive experience overall, and that you're going to have a successful test.
  • Practice visualization. Picture yourself having a fun and easy MRI test. See yourself telling jokes with the technician, and picture yourself enjoying the test.
  • Use your imagination. Before the test, try and create a fun nature scene, or imagine your dream vacation, where you are completely relaxed, and enjoying yourself. During the test, use your imagination and picture yourself there as enjoying yourself there.
  • Use the test as an experience to practice relaxation. Practice visualizing relaxing imagery, think relaxing thoughts, and practice relaxation techniques.
  • Let go of the fear. If you feel fear before or during the test, just do your best to let go. Think 'let go'.
