Fear of Flying
The fear of flying is a fear that can really take the enjoyment out of something that can be a lot of fun. Flying is fun! Imagine all of the technology involved, the people, and the wonder of flight! The fear of flying can have an impact on things such as family vacations, business trips, or even recreational flight. Some people will still fly despite having a fear of it, and others simply choose to travel by other means such as by automobile.
The fear of flight can be a result of a variety of causes, including a having a feeling of not being in control, fear of the plane crashing, and a fear flying over certain areas such as the ocean or water. It also may be based on other phobias such as claustrophobia (fear of tight spaces) or acrophobia (fear of heights), or fearing having a panic attack on a plane. The fear of flight is often treated through cognitive behavioral therapy.
Discover a proven solution for overcoming panic attacks
In my own situation I had always enjoyed flying, even having taken some flying lessons in my early twenties. A couple of years later I was not as excited to fly, in fact I had really started to avoid it. I definitely had developed a fear of being on an airplane.
I once had a panic attack while flying. I also remember what triggered it. It was me having constant pictures of something happening to the plane that was not a positive outcome to say the least! The question is, if I had thought nothing but positive thoughts about the flight, and had really pictured a safe and happy flight in my own mind's eye, would I have had a panic attack?
I have since enjoyed flying in the neighborhood of 30-40 times since that panic attack.
I admit that my fear was completely irrational. If you look at the statistics and compare the safety of flight to the safety of driving, flying comes out a clear winner. Not just by a little bit, but by a landslide.
It was able to overcome my fear of flying by developing a rational, scientific viewpoint on the topic, and by regularly practicing relaxation techniques. It took time, but I'd say that the following was what helped the most: thinking rationally and scientifically about the safety of flying, understanding the statistics of flying versus other daily activities, and realizing that even thought I was not in total control on a plane, it was still safe to fly. I think out of everything it was the simple act of rational thinking that helped me out the most.
