Generalized Anxiety Disorder
While this site is geared towards panic attacks, it is very useful to understand some of the other anxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder. Through understanding some of the anxiety disorders we are able to develop a well-rounded understanding of the stress response and how it is related to panic attacks and other forms of anxiety. What is generalized anxiety disorder? Generalized anxiety disorder is characterized by excessive worry or unrealistic worry and concerns that would be considered unreasonable for a given situation. The good news with this is that there is help available, and your physician should be able to provide you with treatment. What are the symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder?
It's important to note that panic attacks can occur in just about all of the anxiety disorders, but there is a difference between anxiety and panic attacks. Anxiety is a form of worry. The experience of anxiety is much more gradual and typically lasts much longer than a panic attack. Panic attacks are much shorter in duration, and they are also more intense. There are also some specific types of anxiety. Separation anxiety occurs when a person becomes anxious when they are away from family members or loved ones. Performance anxiety is much like the name sounds, a form of anxiety that can occur in sports, acting, singing and other public performances. Test anxiety occurs when a person is anxious prior to or during a test. And social anxiety occurs when a person is extremely anxious in social situations, so much so that it disrupts their work, school, and/or social lives. Anxiety is something that can really affect the quality of your life. The good news is that it is treatable, and there are steps that you can take to immediately help with it. For instance, relaxation techniques are very useful in helping to overcome many different forms of anxiety. There are some web sites that I love to use to do research into just about any medical condition and understand more about it. The Mayo Clinic is an excellent site that I use regularly as well as the Merck Manual. Both of those sites are excellent in terms of educating yourself further about any medical condition you might be curious about. These are fun sites to visit, and can provide you with some excellent insights.
