You may have experienced anxiety attacks yourself. It starts with the doomed feeling of the world coming to an end followed by the physical symptoms of heart palpitations, excessive sweating and fast breathing. In short, it is your instinctive fight-or-flight response but without the valid reasons. Find If It Is the Real Thing

You want to be sure that the physical and mental symptoms are indeed panic attacks. Keep in mind that certain medical conditions like sudden strokes and heart attacks as well as asthma can have similar signs. If he is suffering from a panic attack, then you can ask him what you can do to help. More often than not, help for panic attacks come in the form of taking the person away from the source of distress. You should also ask if he is taking medications and if he knows about the techniques to stop the panic attack in its tracks. If so, then provide assistance.

Another way to calm down the symptoms is to provide a cooling effect in a physical way. If you can find a washcloth or a piece of cloth, soak it in cold water. This can then be placed around the face and neck to help cool down the extremely warm feelings experienced by sufferers of panic attacks.

Speak Gently but Firmly

As you know from experience, dismissing the fears of the person will not help in any way. For the person suffering from the panic attack, the fears of doom are very real, very tangible and, thus, dismissing them will only make the person think more about his fears. Instead, in a gentle but firm manner just say "It is okay" and then coach the person on breathing techniques to help him relax. Just try to be as much of a calming presence as possible by minimizing the stress levels but not dismissing the fears as nothing.

Also, it is important not to restrain the person from doing his thing just as long as he will not harm himself and other persons. The trick is in persuading him to remain still but never grabbing, holding and restraining him because that would only make the panic attack worse. If he wants to move around, the best help for panic attacks in this case is to suggest activities like brisk walking to help take their minds off their symptoms. Plus, it will help pump blood into the system, thus, calming down the physical symptoms.

If your combined efforts do not take effect within 15 minutes - the symptoms become worse or there are no apparent changes - then it is time to call for medical help. Of course, there are conditions to such a radical move, of which the most important is the consent of the person. Better yet, you should contact the nearest of kin for advise.
