Overcoming Panic Attacks

Panic attacks can be one of the most frightening experiences that you will ever have. But is there any chance of overcoming panic attacks?

If you've experienced panic attacks you might also wonder if there's anything you can do on your own to help.

There is good news.

There is a lot of help available, and there are some things you can do on your own right away that can help immensely.

What can a person do to become panic-free?

There are a few essential steps that need to take place.

If you are experiencing panic attacks, you need to talk to your doctor about it and begin treatment.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy might be recommended by your doctor.

Your doctor may also prescribe medications to help with the panic attacks.

Once you have obtained medical advice and treatment, you will have taken a crucial step on the path to becoming panic-free. This should provide you with some re-assurance that panic attacks are really nothing to be afraid of.

In my own personal experience, the single most important factor in becoming panic-free was to stop fearing the attacks themselves.

Once you accept a panic attack as it's occurring, even if for a brief moment, you will have developed courage towards the attack itself.

At that moment you will have taken an important step on the road to becoming panic-free -- you will have begun to overcome the fear of having an attack.

Ok, so we've started to overcome fear, now what?

It's time to take a good look at lifestyle. There are many questions to be addressed, such as:

  • How do you manage your time?
  • What kinds of foods do you eat?
  • How much alcohol do you consume?
  • How much sleep do you get each night?
  • How often do you exercise?
  • Do you practice any methods for developing a deep state of relaxation?
  • What about stress management techniques?
  • Are you a rational thinker?

Panic and anxiety can both be affected by things such as alcohol consumption, caffeine, and sleep. All three of those items are something that we control ourselves.

Developing objectivity is also very useful, and talking to your doctor can help with this.

It can be especially helpful talking to your doctor to help you understand panic attacks, what they feel like, and how you can tell when you're having one.

Once you've talked to your doctor and followed his/her advice, taken a look at your lifestyle, and received professional help, you will be well on your way to becoming panic-free.

However, it is important to note that becoming panic-free may not occur overnight.

In my own personal experience, I had made positive lifestyle changes, learned how my thinking was affecting and triggering the panic attacks, learned stress management techniques, and also began practicing relaxation techniques, but was still having the occasional panic attack.

Then all of a sudden one day I had the beginning of a panic attack, and then relaxed completely. I thought to myself "bring it on", and the panic attack never actually occurred.

A couple of months later I realized that I hadn't had a panic attack for a while. A few months turned into a year. A year turned into a few years... and I thankfully still haven't experienced one to this day.

    I am incredibly grateful.

It seems as though all of your efforts are cumulative and their positive impacts seem to add up over time. These efforts include:

  • Following your treatment plan as specified by your doctor and health professionals.
  • Learning and practicing relaxation techniques.
  • Learning to manage and cope with stress.
  • Making positive lifestyle changes.

    Tips for Panic Attacks

Everyone needs an operations manual or a situational guide for what to do when something is being experienced.

Talk to your doctor about what tips you can follow or steps you can take when you are experiencing panic or anxiety.

Hopefully with a little bit of education, effort, and application of what you've learned, you'll be experiencing a state of happiness and joy as you enjoy being panic-free. Here are some tips for panic attacks.

    Stressed?

You might have experienced daily stress in your life and not even known about it. I was regularly experiencing panic attacks even though I had never thought of myself as a "stressed-out" individual.

Stress is a funny sort of thing. It doesn't always appear evident. However, if you're regularly experiencing panic or anxiety, there is a good chance that you've experienced stress before.

The truth is, everyone can use some good stress management. Learning to manage stress is definitely a key component in becoming panic-free.
