Panic Attacks at Night
Panic attacks at night can be quite a frightening experience.
I remember I had two night time panic attacks (also known as nocturnal panic attacks) in total. Fortunately they took place after I had started learning to cope with panic attacks in general.
In this case with these two panic attacks at night, they were fairly easy to deal with (thankfully...). As soon as the panic attack occurred, I woke up, realized what was happening, and immediately attempted to relax as best I could.
After a short time, I was able to drift off back to sleep and slept through until the morning.
After having another panic attack at night, I decided to practice relaxation techniques just before bed (such as a few yoga poses), and some in bed, such as deep breathing.
Discover a proven solution for overcoming panic attacks
I recall reading that practicing relaxation before bed could help with falling asleep, and also help with getting a better night's sleep overall.
As soon as I started practicing relaxation right before bedtime, the night time panic attacks were resolved completely!
Seemed like a two for one deal to me! A better night's sleep, and in my case, being panic attack free at night.
Practicing relaxation before bedtime seemed quite helpful, and I continued to practice each and every night before bed, if for no other reason than to help with getting a good night's sleep.
It seemed to me that the more I practiced relaxing, the easier it became to induce the relaxation response.
Not only did practicing relaxation before bed help with panic attacks, it also seemed to help a good deal with coping with stress.
There were a few things that I incorporated into a daily routine:
I thought about what went well. I'd do my best to think about what went well during the day, and to be thankful for those successes, no matter how big or small they were.
Created time to relax before bed. I'd aim to give myself an hour before bed to just simply relax. Often times I'd do a few yoga poses, stretch, and then go and pick some light reading. I'd read for a few minutes, do a breathing exercise for a few minutes, and then just let myself drift off to sleep.
Avoided too much stimulation. I'd try and avoid things like thinking about work, doing actual work, or doing anything else that might be stressful just before bedtime.
Focused on the positive and tried to enjoy the evening. After everything that I needed to do around the house was completed for the night (housework, etc.), I'd do my best to really enjoy my free time. I'd try to treat it as a mini-vacation, a time to enjoy with family, relax, and get ready for a good night's sleep.
