In my experience speaking to my doctor and seeking treatment for panic attacks was the best thing that I ever did. Panic attacks were definitely not something I was able to overcome overnight, and I don't think I would have learned to do it on my own.
There are also many panic attack support options available as well, in addition to natural treatment methods.
He spoke to me about what panic attacks were, and what treatment for panic attacks are available.
Prescription medication was the first step in my treatment to cure anxiety and panic attacks. Counseling, another recommendation from my doctor, was next to follow.
I found it useful to ask a variety of questions, and educate myself as much as I could about the medication which was prescribed, and treatment for panic attacks in general.
When I first started taking the prescribed medication (I was prescribed an SSRI medication) I wondered how long I would have to take it. There were even times that I wondered if I'd have take it for the rest of my life.
Fortunately, I did not have to take it forever. I was on and off prescription medication for panic attacks for a little over a year in total.
Once I was able to better cope with panic attacks (through counseling), began understanding them (through reading and research), what triggered them in my own life, and how to better cope with stress, I spoke with my doctor about stopping the medication altogether. He provided a plan by which I began taking smaller doses gradually, eventually stopping taking the medication altogether.
The treatment for panic attacks prescribed by my doctor and counselor was very effective for me.
However, a cure for fighting panic attacks didn't happen overnight, and I had to do my part by actually following the recommendations they presented.
It has now been several years since I've had a panic attack, and I am also medication free when it comes to panic attacks or anxiety.
My counselor was not only able to provide me with professional and effective treatment for panic attacks, but also provided some great advice on learning to cope with stress and learning how to live a balanced life.
Panic attacks are something that I didn't feel comfortable talking about, and I certainly didn't want anyone to know I ever had one.
There were also some things that I was concerned about which my counselor was able to help with. I was able to ask questions like: "What happens if my boss finds out that I regularly have panic attacks?", or "If I have panic attacks, can I still find a way to do a good job at work?".
I also found talking to my counselor very helpful because it helped defuse the panic attacks themselves in my own life.
I personally feel that part of the reasons panic attacks seemed so terrifying to me was because I never spoke to anyone about them.
So speaking openly about them to my doctor and counselor worked wonders for me. And, many people find panic attacks support groups helpful as well.
However, I was sure to also seek advice on who I should inform about the fact that I was having panic attacks.
There were people that I told, and others who I determined (after speaking with my counselor) that had no business to know.
